<p>The push for increased numbers of women in the commercial airline pilot pool is continuing to grow, with initiatives and scholarships being launched in various parts of the world.</p>
<p>As ever, Women in Aviation International (WAI) is front and centre in the drive. The organisation, which offers a variety of educational programmes and resources to help women enter the industry, has recently announced that it is now ready to receive applications for its 2020 scholarships.</p>

<p>As WAI points out, new scholarships are constantly being posted and there are currently 85 such funding programmes on offer “for flight training, scholastic study, maintenance training, and a variety of scholarships for individuals in all stages of life. Internships are also being offered”.</p>
<p>Potential candidates are advised to monitor the WAI website for additional scholarships which the organisation expects to add in the coming months. Each applicant can apply for up to three of the scholarships each year. </p>
<p>To give an idea of the value now being placed on encouraging women to seek careers in aviation, WAI reports that in 2019, $948,500 of scholarships funds are being awarded, which “includes an additional $73,000 in June from an anonymous contributor”. The total value of WAI scholarships since they began has now surpassed $12 million.</p>
<p>The 2020 scholarships will be awarded during WAI’s 2020 conference in March next year. To qualify for a scholarship, an applicant must first be a WAI member by 1 November 2019, then their application needs to be with WAI by 12 November 2019.</p>
<p>L3Harris Technologies, which came into being on 29 June 2019 following the all-stock merger between Harris Corporation and L3 Technologies, has begun life by not only adding a new $100 million training centre for commercial airline pilots near London Gatwick airport, it has announced the first two candidates to be awarded sponsorship under its Female Scholarship Scheme.</p>
<p>Also within L3Harris, though not wholly directed at young women, is the Prince’s Trust Flying Scholarship, which the company created as part of the RAF100 legacy. Launched earlier in 2019, the programme will support three young people each year for the next ten years as they undergo “a streamlined training course at L3Harris Airline Academy in Bournemouth on single-engine aircraft”. Both L3Harris and the Prince’s Trust believe in increasing diversity within the aviation industry, so applications from women will be most welcome.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, in India, new scholarships to help young women become commercial pilots have been announced by what may seem an unlikely benefactor. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (also known as Honda 2Wheelers India) has launched a project entitled Sapno Ki Udaan as part of the women empowerment element of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.</p>
<p>The project will provide fully-funded scholarships to 20 young women who wish to become commercial pilots. Initially candidates are being invited from the four Indian states where Honda has manufacturing plants, namely Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka and Rajasthan. The top five applicants from each state will be given training places, as well as being assisted in gaining employment as commercial pilots upon successful completion of the course. Each scholarship is worth around 8 million rupees ($116,000).</p>
<p>The young women applying for these openings will need to have achieved more than 90% in both physics and maths in Class 12 to be eligible to apply. Income level will also be taken into account.</p>
<p>Honda decided to develop this CSR project as the percentage of women commercial pilots in India is only around 12% at present. Applications are now being accepted and the closing date is 10 August.</p>
