<p>Training the next generation of aerospace and airline personnel can be an expensive business. Postgraduate studies and pilot qualifications can run into sizeable amounts. The latter, for example, can regularly top six figures in US dollars.</p>

<p>Candidates can be thankful, therefore, that scholarships continue to provide a helping hand. <em>Flight Jobs</em> has already reported on the <a href="https://jobs.flightglobal.com/article/giving-back-round-the-world-pilot-helps-launch-academic-scholarship/">scholarship created by Shaesta Waiz</a>, the founder and president of Dreams Soar, for female students on the Flight Training Program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.</p>
<p>Now another scholarship, initially announced in June, has unveiled its first recipient. Anamaria Dioane will be the first to benefit from The <a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/flybe-ceo-launches-cranfield-scholarship-with-iata-d-458651/">Christine Ourmières-Widener Diversity Scholarship</a>, which was created by the former Flybe chief executive after she was honoured in the inaugural IATA Diversity and Inclusion awards.</p>
<p>The scholarship will help Dioane to fund her studies while she undertakes the Air Transport Management MSc programme at Cranfield University, following her recent graduation from the Air Navigation section at the Politehnica University of Bucharest. During her bachelor’s degree, she also studied at the Universitat Politècnica de València and has completed two internships – with the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration and the European Agency for the Safety of Air Traffic Management.</p>
<p>Following the announcement of the scholarship recipient, Ourmières-Widener remarked that she was delighted to help Dioane to continue her studies and “become a future leader in the aviation industry”, also adding: “I look forward to working with her as a mentor on this new adventure.”</p>
<p>Not a new scholarship, but one continuing to help future aviators achieve their goal is the Air BP Sterling Pilot Scholar award, now celebrating its fifth scholarship. The latest recipient is 18-year old Kristoff Ahlner from Essex in the UK.</p>
<p>The scholarship is worth around £10,000 and aims to assist aspiring UK pilots such as Ahlner to obtain their Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL). According to the new Airbus Global Market Forecast (GMF), the world’s passenger and freighter aircraft fleet will grow from the current figure of nearly 23,000 to almost 48,000 by 2038. The concomitant effect is that there will be a need for 550,000 new pilots during that period. Air BP believes such demand makes its programme all the more important.</p>
<p>Ahlner’s desire to become a pilot began when he joined the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (Hutton Squadron) at the age of 13 and simultaneously began gliding at Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club. He recently completed his flight training at Stapleford Aerodrome in Essex following his A Levels and intends to study aeronautical engineering at university before pursuing a career as a pilot.</p>
<p>Ahlner joined past scholarship recipients at a special event to mark five years of the programme which was held at Air BP’s global headquarters in Sunbury-Upon-Thames, UK. Speaking at the event, Jon Platt, CEO Air BP, remarked, “We are delighted to welcome all five scholars and many congratulations to our latest scholar, Kristoff. We look forward to hearing about your future progress. We are proud of all our scholars and their achievements to date. BP is committed to encouraging young people to gain a better understanding of the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) education for their futures and the wider aviation industry of which the Sterling Pilot Scholarship programme is a great example.”</p>
<p>Past scholar, Zoë Burnett, who is currently a First Officer at Flybe, added, “The Air BP scholarship has meant that I am able to achieve my dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot. I am reminded of this each time I see the Air BP truck refuel an aircraft. During the course of my work, I have also learnt about Air BP’s commitment to safe operations and I am impressed by the company’s efforts as well as its contribution to ensuring safe refuelling.”</p>
<p>Air BP works with the Honourable Company of Air Pilots (HCAP), formerly known as The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN), to organise the scholarship, because of HCAP’s excellence in promoting the availability of scholarships to a wide public audience and its history of conducting a rigorous and fair selection process.</p>
<p>These scholarships mentioned are just some examples of the many such funding initiatives available to young people. For all those with a desire to make a career in aviation and aerospace, the message is simple – research and investigate every scholarship you can find.</p>
