<p>Taking your first steps on the way to becoming an airline pilot is a pretty good way to begin a new year and many a new candidate all over the world will be doing just that. And when the training provider is launching a new airline partnership, the excitement can extend to all parties in the process.</p>

<p>That’s the situation at VA Airline Training (VA) which has just welcomed its first airline sponsored trainees of 2020, a group of four Titan Airways cadets – Stephanie Lenney, Gary Field, Samuel Van Schijndel and Varon Ramakrishnan – into training at its Cambridge, UK, training centre. Along with those Titan students, two self-sponsored cadets were welcomed by VA’s managing director Anthony Petteford, Titan Airways’ pilot manager Captain Matthew Wilson, plus other senior personnel from both organisations.</p>
<p>In their partnership, VA and Titan will be putting the candidates thorough a programme which they describe as “truly pioneering EASA multi-pilot training”. This has been sponsored by the airline and combines Airline Pilot Standards (APS) and Type Rating training at Cambridge with VA, and Advanced (Multi-pilot) Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) with VA’s training partner, Ultimate High Academy, at Goodwood. Upon successful completion of the course, scheduled for June 2020, the Titan cadets will begin line operations for the airline out of its base at London Stansted Airport.</p>
<p>“We were extremely impressed by the number of high-quality applications we received; there were many deserving applicants and we very much hope to be able to offer more of them the same opportunity later this year,” remarked Captain Wilson. “We are delighted to welcome Stephanie, Gary, Samuel and Varon to our Titan Airways team.”</p>
<p>VA’s Petteford, added, “We are very proud of our relationship with Titan Airways and delighted to be part of this pioneering programme. Titan Airways’ forward-thinking decision to embrace the three Multi-Pilot training elements of APS MCC (Multi-Crew Co-operation), Advanced UPRT and Type Rating into one seamless programme, reflects our own approach to training and will ensure graduates from either Modular or Integrated routes are fully prepared for airline operations. We look forward to working with Stephanie, Gary, Samuel and Varon; and welcoming more Titan Airways cadets to VA in the near future.”</p>
<p>VA and Ultimate High Academy (UHA) announced their Training Alliance and worked together to develop a new joint Multi-pilot Aircraft (MPA) ‘Airline Ready’ programme. Trainees completing APS MCC courses with VA progress seamlessly onto an Advanced MPA Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) course with UHA. The partners say their new programme “builds a continuum of multi-pilot competencies for <em>ab initio</em> pilots prior to commencing their first aircraft type rating training with an airline partner”.</p>
<p>According to VA, EASA competency-based MPA training has evolved significantly in recent years, with the organisation’s own APS MCC training being the pioneer such programme in the UK in April 2018. UHA, meanwhile, pioneered Advanced on-aircraft UPRT, which received approval by the UK CAA in December 2019 as being in full compliance with new EU regulation FCL.745.A, ahead of the final mandatory implementation date of 20 December 2019.</p>
<p>UHA’s Advanced MPA UPRT is delivered in the Slingsby T67 Firefly – a genuine, multi-pilot cockpit environment – using the same multi-pilot techniques, processes and strategies developed during VA’s APS MCC training. The trainee and the instructor alternate between the roles of Pilot Flying (PF) and Pilot Monitoring (PM) in a variety of scenarios to assist the earliest possible recognition of upsets and develop the mindset of strong Crew Resource Management (CRM) competencies through clear and open communication.</p>
<p>VA and UHA say the two courses combined provide “the ultimate qualification programme for a pilot’s first airline type rating”. The pair anticipate that the majority of customers for this ‘Airline Ready’ programme will be airline employers requiring newly qualified pilots to be as fully prepared as possible for aircraft type rating training and initial line training; leading subsequently to a safer flying career. The joint programme will also be made available to individual customers who would like to enhance their competencies and meet the new regulatory requirements.</p>
