<p>It is no secret that the cost of aviation training is high, especially for those aiming to be commercial airline pilots. A six-figure sum in US dollars is the regular outlay required to get to that level.</p>

<p>Being a commercial pilot does not mean that you have to be flying for a passenger airline, of course. There are many carriers which deal purely in cargo and they need pilots just as much. That need is recognised by the industry body which represent the smaller freight operators in the US, the Regional Air Cargo Carriers Association (RACCA), which has just announced its scholarship recipients for 2019.</p>
<p>In addition to its own RACCA Scholarship, the Association works alongside cargo giant UPS in administrating the RACCA UPS Scholarship awards. These grants are presented to students to “foster their continuing education in pursing aviation careers”. Neither is limited to studying in the cargo sector, nor even the airline industry. And while they do not cover the amount needed for a full course from zero to the right-hand seat, such awards prove incredibly useful in the development of a career.</p>
<p>“Scholarships are of paramount importance to building the aviation workforce, so it is incumbent on industry to reach back and give those just starting out a helping hand,” explains RACCA president Stan Bernstein. “Thankfully, industry is stepping up efforts to help aspiring aviators, aviation maintenance technicians, airline managers and flight operations personnel to achieve their dreams. The entire industry benefits from the well-educated and dedicated professionals produced by these scholarships. The RACCA scholarships, awarded over many years, have gone to such inspiring scholars and this year is no different.”</p>
<p>The four 2019 RACCA scholarship winners have been awarded $2,000 each. The first of these, Candice Baker from Swedesburg, Iowa, is working towards a career in aviation maintenance. She comes from an aviation family where her grandfather and father ran Baker Flying Service. Her brother is a charter/cargo pilot and Baker works alongside him and her father in aviation maintenance at a local FBO. Her ambition is to reopen the family business.</p>

<p>Also from an aviation family, Sophie Robinson from Battle Ground, Washington, attends the Commercial Pilot Program at Big Bend Community College. She already has a private pilot’s licence plus a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and is currently working on her instrument rating, commercial and flight instructor certificates, but also wants to earn a seaplane rating.</p>
<p>Aiming for a career as a cargo pilot is Zane Janneck from Mooresville, Indiana, who is currently studying at the University of North Dakota. Having achieved his commercial multi-engine certificate, Janneck is now working on his CFI certificate and working toward a specialisation in safety.</p>
<p>Daniel Remie from Marston Mills, Massachusetts, attends the Burnett Honors College of the University of Central Florida where he is on the Aerospace Engineering Program. He has already won an engineering internship with Lockheed Martin as a systems engineer and aims to gain “a holistic view of aviation engineering for his goal of working on aeronautical and astronautical structures”.</p>
<p>The RACCA UPS FlightPath Scholarship is designed for aspiring pilots, maintenance and flight operations professionals. The latest set of recipients – each awarded $2,500 each – are all interns with UPS.</p>
<p>Jack Dillard from Birmingham, Alabama, wants to fly for Ameriflight before moving on to a career at UPS Airlines. He already holds a commercial multi-engine rating with instrument privileges and He would also like to become a check airman and simulator instructor.</p>
<p>Having already earned a degree in aviation with a major concentration in Aerospace Management from Eastern Kentucky University, Brandon Peege has continued his flight education at ATP Flight School, earning instrument, commercial AMEL ASEL and single-engine, multi-engine and instrument flight instructor ratings. After his UPS internship, he aims to join the US Air Force Reserves to fly C-17s before returning to UPS.</p>
<p>Ismael Jimenez-Barreto went from <em>ab initio</em> status to certified flight instructor in just 13 months by the age of 20. He has an Associate’s degree in aeronautical science from Polk State College and is studying for his Bachelor’s degree. He plans to fly for Ameriflight before moving back to UPS.</p>
<p>Ukraine-born Natalya Shemigon is another who wants to return to UPS as a cargo pilot after flying for Ameriflight. She is already a flight instructor, having achieved a Bachelor’s degree is Aviation and Aerospace Science, graduating Cum Laude from Metropolitan State University in Denver. She plans to use her scholarship to achieve a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) rating.</p>
<p>RACCA and UPS are now looking for talented candidates to submit applications for their next set of awards.
