<p>There have been some big changes at the top of Ryanair over the past year. Michael O’Leary has moved up to become Group CEO, Ryanair DAC (Designated Activity Company, i.e. the airline operation) took on a new CEO, Edward Wilson, while two of its senior executives – COO Peter Bellew and CMO Kenny Jacobs – decided it was time to move on.</p>

<p>The drive to be the market leader, however, remains strong though, and the Group (which alongside Ryanair DAC includes Lauda, Buzz and Malta Air) expects to carry 154 million passengers in its FY2020, which ends on 31 March. With that traffic figure set to grow even more once the company’s Boeing 737 MAX aircraft start to arrive, ensuring that it has enough pilots is imperative.</p>
<p>The Dublin-based carrier has therefore launched a major training partnership with Aviomar Flight Academy to deliver a Ryanair-mentored programme in Rome. “This partnership will ensure Ryanair continues to attract highly trained professional pilots to support its growth across Europe,” the company states.</p>
<p>Just as with the major training partnership <a href="https://jobs.flightglobal.com/article/ryanair-prepares-for-personnel-growth/">Ryanair began with VA Airline Training in July 2019</a>, this new programme gives trainee pilots a structured path through “an exceptional training course” and enables them to reach a standard where they are ready to join the Ryanair Boeing 737 Type Rating programme.</p>
<p>Candidates will be trained by Aviomar Flight Academy instructors, using Ryanair procedures. Over the next four to five years, the airline intends to recruit up to 400 new pilots from across Europe and have them trained at Aviomar Flight Academy. Student pilots who commence their <em>ab-initio</em> training now can expect to graduate and start their careers with Ryanair from early 2022.</p>
<p>Announcing the course, Ryanair emphasised the “unparalleled” career opportunities for new pilots at the airline. These include the chance to work from one of its 82 bases – having undertaken “industry leading training standards and success rates” – on rosters offering five days on, followed by four days off. Additionally, a structured command upgrade programme offers the “fastest time to command upgrade (3 to 4 years) and outstanding earnings potential,” the carrier states.</p>
<p>“This new training programme is Ryanair’s only mentored pilot programme in Southern Europe, and this partnership highlights our commitment to supporting, developing and recruiting pilots for current and future positions,” declared Neal McMahon, Ryanair’s director of operations. “With hundreds of daily Ryanair flights into Italy, we expect students from across Europe to enrol in Aviomar Flight Academy’s Ryanair Mentored pilot training programme.”</p>
<p>McMahon’s colleague and head of crew training, Senan O’Shea, added, “This new programme will provide the airline with a steady pipeline of talented and professional pilots from around Europe to meet the needs of our growing network. Trainee pilots can look forward to unmatched opportunities.</p>
<p>“After careful consideration, we have chosen Aviomar Flight Academy as our Italy-based pilot training partner due to their continuous high standards in initial flight training and APS MCC (Airline Pilot Standards Multi-Crew Cooperation),” O’Shea continued. “We are pleased to lend our operational expertise to Aviomar Flight Academy, especially in the provision of what will be an outstanding Ryanair Mentored Programme. This combination will be the best possible preparation for an airline career with Ryanair.”</p>

<p>With VA Airline Training and Aviomar now recruited as training partners, it will be interesting to observe how the airline develops further in this area, particularly in the post-Brexit era, and where other training opportunities may arise.</p>
